Horley showed up early for a 9.30 push in Sunbury, with a few regulars missing but boosted by Adam Birkett making his first appearance
Sunbury were excellent opposition, playing hockey the right way and were good sportsmen throughout, with a mix of older experienced heads and soem very talented youngsters that would give Horley a tough examination
First half was end to end, Horley had a few chances but Sunbury also had chances, with the midfield battles dominating the highlights
Second half became a lot more frantic, as the game opened up, and it was first blood to Horley, a brilliant interception and play through found Michael Whitmore who slotted the ball into Ben Shuttleworth who finished decisively with the ball flying in and then through the net, the umpire was unsure what to give but thankfully Sunbury admitted that the goal was legal and it was 1-0 Horley.
Sunbury looked to comeback and were making several good attacks, however Richard Williamson was a rock at the back able supported by the superb Nick Jones and Jamie Shuttleworth, who repelled wave after wave of green shirts, and when they did break through, Harry Williamson in goal dealt with everything including the kitchen sink that was chucked at him.
As Horley soaked up pressure, they then sucker punched Sunbury, Andy Turnbull did a trademark drive down the wing and crossed to Michael Whitmore who coolly finished near post past the keeper.
With ten minutes left Horley looked to keep what they had, and defended resolutely till the full time whistle.
An excellent performance from all, but Richard Williamson pipped his son Harry and Jamie Shuttleworth to man of the match and is a worthy winner, a man mountain at the back, steel and fire and an excellent addition this year to horley
DoD goes to David Skingley for temporarliy playing American football and sacking the opposition left back!
