Horley were staring down the barrel after a tough start to the season, back to back promotions meant this year was always going to be tough, and with captain out for season, vice captain poached by ones, and vice vice captain with a broken collarbone an innocent bystander might ask do Horley have the bottle and leadership to get points with all that has gone against them?
This question was answered emphatically yes by the full time whistle against a fiery leatherhead side that fought for everything on and off the ball. Horley had leaders all over the pitch none more so than Adrian Shuttleworth who led by example at the back with Nick Jones, Bill Cooper and Richard Williamson making last ditch tackle after tackle.
It was shutts who scored the only goal of the game, a superb reaction to a short corner after ten minutes, and from then on the game seesawed both ways, Horley could and should have scored more, Justin Morgan from midfield was particularly dangerous however Horley were lucky at the end to survive multiple short corners.
Chances fell for both sides and the opportunity for goals wasn’t the only thing missed, as both sides committed some very bad tackles on and off the ball and language between the two teams escalated far beyond the usual pleasantries. David Skingley, Ashley Fishenden, Andy Turnbull and Tony Baldwin fought hard in the middle ensure Horley carried the day.
A win is a win, and a hard fought one left the men in white elated, with special praise for Luke Mutton on his twos debut, battling hard, however man of the match went to Nick and Shutts!
With three points on the board Horley can start looking onwards and upwards
