After a freezing week it was nice to have a milder day and a defrosted pitch to play on away at Woking. Twelve players travelled over to Wokjng to face ther 7's, apparently a "development" team. The game started well with the Horley team winning the toss. Workings team were a dichotomy:half ten age boys with pace and skill, half 20 year olds. With speed and skill. It quickly became clear why the Woking 7's are top of this league.
Horley soon found themselves 3 down, before late in the first half Captain Chris Stevens put one in for Horley after a great run down the left.
Horley worked hard for the remainder of the first half but couldn't convert again.
The second half was punctuated by some tough attacking from Wokung and solid defending from Horley. A rare break from Horley's front line resulted in a short corner, which eventually hit the goal after Louis Kirkham fought through two tackles to convert the shot.
Woking seemed shocked by the apparent come back and started to venture more players forward. Horley struggled to get the ball away from their D and simple mistakes from many players (including the author) meant Horley never found their flow.
Woking managed a late fourth goal despite heroic defensive efforts.
On paper a good result for Horley against the top of the league but the team left with a definite feeling of "could do better". Hopefully a few training sessions and games after the long Xmas break will see improved communication and a return of those basic skills.
