Horley Hockey Club's Men's Second Team start the season in great form with a well deserved win over Addiscombe Herons

Horley Mens Second team started off their season with a well deserved win today away against Addiscombe Herons. Starting out with 10 men due to car trouble, HHC still made good use of the ball troubling the Heron's defence a number of times. Things took a turn for the worse ten minutes in when HHC's forward Jon Thompson took a hard struck 16 yard hit to his right foot which left him basically immobile for the rest of the game.

Not to be put down however Jon almost immediately linked up with captain Chris Stevens who's hard hit shot found its target despite the Addiscombe keeper getting a pad to it.

Luckily for HHC their 11th man, Scott Barron turned up shortly afterwards giving the team more mobility up front. Addiscombe however were determined not to be a walk over and fought back to one all before half time, despite some truly heroic defending from The HHC back line.

The second half started fairly well balanced with the HHC keeper making some stunning saves despite his relative inexperience. The deadlock was broken however when Jon Thompson found himself top D with room to spare and unleashed one of his thunderous shots that passed the Addiscombe keeper at waist height. Five minutes later it was like déjà vue when Jon again found himself with the ball in space in the D after a rebound from the keeper, and again converted the opportunity.

From that point on it was mainly one way traffic with Scott and Arfan making penetrating runs and passes, close calls on both posts and front of goal scrambles that would normally have resulted in a brace of goals. Abdul Hanid was solid in midfield providing much of the ball that the forwards made use of.

HHC added a final score to the tally through a new short corner routine turned in on the near post by Captain Chris Stevens.

Overall a great performance by HHC which bodes well for the rest of the season. Every player played well and more importantly the team played well together, with linking sections of play and solid defence.
