It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Ian Rhodes, who died on Monday, 2 March 2026.
Ian’s involvement with Horley Hockey Club began in 1965, when he joined the inaugural team founded by Bill MacAdam, who also sadly passed away earlier this year. Since then, Ian became a cornerstone of the hockey club—not only as a player, but also serving as Club Captain, Fixtures Secretary, umpire, and, in later years, a dedicated match supporter. Over his long playing career, he captained all three men’s teams as well as the mixed team, and proudly offered side-line support to the newly formed Men’s 4th XI as they started out a couple of years ago.
Ian’s commitment extended beyond hockey. He served Horley Cricket & Hockey Club as Chairman on several occasions, was Club President from 2001 to 2006, and was a longstanding Trustee, contributing greatly to the club’s growth and spirit
A true gentleman, Ian will be fondly remembered by everyone at Horley Hockey Club and deeply missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
Ian’s funeral will take place at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium at 11:45am on 24 March 2026, followed by a wake at Horley Cricket & Hockey Club at approximately 12:45–1:00pm.
